Two reviews in today's blatts. In the Times, Brian Schofield is unimpressed, but says so in such a reasonable and constructive manner that I can't complain. In the Telegraph (not yet online), Sinclair McKay is full of enthusiasm, for which I thank him profusely.
In other news, I can report with great pleasure that I have accepted a modest advance from a small left-wing press to pen an unauthorised biography of Jon Gaunt.
Great news on the biog. (How can I buy shares in Schillings)?
ReplyDeleteThanks Shaun. Obviously, I've got to turn it around pretty quick before he's forgotten completely.
ReplyDeleteHow about this:
ReplyDelete"Morbidly obese cunt from the North, claimed to have once written for 'Emmerdale Farm', later famous for shouting his mouth off like a verbal edition of the Daily Mail on local radio. Best forgotten."
Job done, I'd say.
The 1D squeaker's Emmerdale claim is true, in fact. Start of the 90s. Although how many episodes he actually wrote is a moot point.
ReplyDeleteHe also used to write plays in the 80s, and won a Fringe First at Edinburgh for one of them.
Can we stop using "the North" as if it was somehow detrimental to be from there, irrespective of whereabouts or who you are? It's not as if Jon Gaunt would be less odious if he were from Berkhsire.
ReplyDeleteTa.
Oh, Gaunt's not going anywhere. So much work for him to do in Broken Britain with its compensation culture and cult of victimood. Like sueing Talksport and blubbling about the childrens' home. "Baby P could have been me, etc etc".
ReplyDeleteHas he written a misery memoir yet?
My preliminary research tells me that he was in care for six weeks. While undoubtedly an unpleasant experience for him, he was lucky, he got out. I wonder how people who spent their entire formative years in care feel about the way he trades on his institutional holiday?
ReplyDeleteMatthew - I'm both happy and proud to be from "the North" myself. I was merely dumbing down my description to try to fit the subject.
