I've expressed my alarm at the acres of coverage being given to John Sergeant's exit from Strictly Come Dancing by adding to the acres of coverage with a piece in today's Sunday Telegraph. With any luck, I'll be forgiven any hypocrisy and opportunism for the fact that I seized the opportunity to suggest a robust British alternative to the awful Americanism 'water cooler TV'. Long live the 'tea-urn moment'.

  1. "Rather disturbingly unhygienic kitchenette containing fridge overflowing with old lunches and kettle with more fur than a supermodels wardrobe moment" doesn't quite have the same ring to it does it.

  2. Having been to TalkSPORT on a couple of occasions, I know exactly what you're on about. Still, at least the bad smell's gone.

  3. Missing the point completely here of course, but isn't it actually the case that on Christmas Day 1977, Mike Yarwood's show got a larger audience than the Morecambe & Wise show that followed it?

  4. Nice piece. And you've hit the nail on the head with the 'live' TV point. That's exactly why sporting events will still draw major viewing figures over anything else.

I actually yearn for the days when you knew that you were watching something on TV that everyone else was also watching. It meant that people had something proper to talk about the next morning, rather than whinging about the trains!
